"If a child of today can come back to this area at sometime in the future and say, boy, this is a place where we have a strong economy and it's a beautiful place to live, and I can raise my family, I can afford to buy a home, I can afford to start a business, and I can afford to be part of this community ... if we do that, then believe me C2 will have been successful."

Leon Panetta, Director, Panetta Institute

Introduction

Monterey County enjoys a large concentration of post-secondary education and research institutions. Language schools, marine and oceanographic sciences offer unique programs that bring students, visitors, and other professionals into the region. A strong mix of colleges, universities and vocational programs, these programs and others represent a strong, fast-growing, though small, cluster. There is also potential to grow and retain high-tech manufacturing and machining activities from the marine discoveries taking place in the region.
